history of alumni achievement awards
Under the visionary guidance of the then General Body Meeting coordinator, Vanessa Fleury, the Black Alumni Association, in 2018, instituted a prestigious awards collection aimed at honoring the exceptional achievements of black and brown alumni excelling in various fields, with a focus on degrees offered by UNF. This initiative was a resounding success, marked by an extensive nomination process by our dedicated alumni base and the enthusiastic participation of hundreds of voters.
In a celebratory milestone during the fall of 2018, the inaugural Black Alumni Achievement Award recipients were officially unveiled at the Black Alumni General Body Meeting. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, which prevented the hosting of a physical meeting in 2021, we adapted and embraced the virtual realm, proudly announcing the award winners for the 2020 - 2021 year via social media.
In the subsequent academic years, navigating the digital landscape, the awards ceremony seamlessly transitioned into a virtual format for 2021 - 2022. However, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to fostering a sense of community, we joyfully returned to an in-person format for the fall of 2023.
It is important to highlight the instrumental role played by Nehu Bain and Ausjah Felix, esteemed board members, in steering the 2023 awards under their exceptional leadership. Their dedication and vision contributed significantly to the success of the event, showcasing the remarkable achievements of black and brown alumni.
As we continue to celebrate excellence and unity within our community, the Black Alumni Association remains steadfast in its commitment to recognizing and honoring the outstanding accomplishments of our alumni, fostering connections, and building a legacy of inspiration for generations to come.
