BAW '17: Humble Beginnings

BAW '17 marked the very first gathering that would eventually evolve into the iconic Black Alumni Week. At this time, it was simply a weekend, modest in scope but monumental in impact. The weekend consisted of a Friday night Meet & Greet, a Saturday tailgate followed by a party that evening, and a Sunday brunch to close it out. Despite being organized last minute, the event was a resounding success and a testament to the determination and passion of the BAA’s founders: Brandon Jacobs, Jonathan Johnson, Ike Igwe-Onu, and Shennette Sparkes. These trailblazers recognized the need for an event that would reconnect Black alumni and students, laying the groundwork for what would become a cornerstone tradition of the UNF Black Alumni Association.

BAW '18: Expanding Horizons

BAW '18 saw the first major expansion of the event, transforming it from a simple weekend into a multi-day celebration starting on Wednesday. This year introduced several key events that would become staples of Black Alumni Week. The inaugural Campus Tour gave alumni an opportunity to reconnect with UNF’s evolving campus while providing students with a chance to hear stories and wisdom from those who had walked in their shoes. The introduction of the Love of Literacy event highlighted the BAA’s commitment to education and community impact by promoting literacy and fostering a love for learning. Additionally, the first Networking Forum created a space for alumni to share career insights, build connections, and open doors for both personal and professional growth. With these new additions, BAW '18 established itself as more than a social gathering—it became a platform for meaningful engagement and community building.

BAW '19: A Year of Celebration and Connection

BAW '19 marked the explosion of the Black Alumni Social, which had replaced the Meet & Greet in 2018. This event quickly became a cornerstone of the week, drawing alumni and students together in an atmosphere of celebration and camaraderie. The Campus Tour and Networking Forum continued to thrive, providing opportunities for alumni to engage with students and foster meaningful connections. The Love of Literacy event also expanded, highlighting the BAA’s dedication to educational impact within the local community.

Adding to the unforgettable moments of BAW '19, then-Chairman Brandon Jacobs proposed to his now-wife at the end of the tailgate, making it the first-ever proposal during a BAW. This heartfelt milestone underscored the sense of family and unity that defines the event. With its growing influence and vibrant energy, BAW '19 set a new standard for what the week could achieve.

BAW '20: The Last Celebration Before the World Changed

BAW '20 was a vibrant and unforgettable week, filled with joy, connection, and celebration. Alumni and students came together for an incredible lineup of events, creating lasting memories and strengthening bonds within the UNF Black Alumni community. Little did anyone know, the world was about to change drastically. COVID-19 loomed on the horizon, and shortly after BAW '20 concluded, global shutdowns began. Reflecting on this moment, BAW '20 stands out as a bittersweet milestone—a time when everyone came together for one last celebration before the challenges of the pandemic reshaped the world.

BAW '21: A Recap Like No Other

Although BAW '21 didn’t happen due to the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we still wanted to bring the community together in spirit. If you’re curious about what BAW '21 looked like, go ahead and hit play on the video. Trust us, it’s worth it.

In all seriousness, while the week itself couldn’t move forward, we shifted focus to the Alumni Achievement Awards. Held virtually during what would have been BAW, this event became a historic success, raising the most money in BAA history. It was a powerful reminder that even in times of uncertainty, the BAA’s mission and impact continue to thrive.

BAW '22: A Triumphant Return

BAW '22 marked the long-awaited return of large-scale, in-person programming after the challenges of the pandemic. With a renewed focus on connection, empowerment, and well-being, the event introduced the first-ever Mental Health Forum, demonstrating the BAA’s commitment to addressing the holistic needs of its alumni and students. Signature events like the Black Alumni Social, Campus Tour, and Networking Forum brought together alumni and students in record numbers. BAW '22 wasn’t just a return—it was a reinvention, reigniting the community with fresh energy that carried into future events.

BAW '23: Breaking New Ground

Under the leadership of Alex Linton, BAW '23 raised the bar even higher, attracting record participation and engagement. The Black Alumni Social remained a cornerstone of the week, while events like the Campus Tour and Networking Forum continued to provide meaningful opportunities for mentorship and connection. The Mental Health Forum built upon its foundation from the previous year, deepening discussions on mental wellness and its importance within the Black community. With its expanded programming and vibrant energy, BAW '23 reinforced the BAA’s mission to support alumni and students in both personal and professional growth.

BAW '24: Innovation and Impact

BAW '24 showcased the BAA’s ability to adapt and innovate while maintaining its core mission. The Mental Health Forum evolved from a traditional panel discussion into an exciting Trap Yoga session, blending wellness and culture in a way that resonated with attendees. The Black Alumni Social continued to thrive, serving as the heartbeat of the week, while the Campus Tour and Networking Forum remained key touchpoints for mentorship and connection. With a growing focus on community outreach, BAW '24 highlighted the importance of fostering relationships with local schools and alumni to sustain the BAA’s impact in an ever-changing climate.

BAW '25: Evolution and Engagement

BAW '25 embraced change, integrating more digital tools to enhance engagement. Attendees could now join the BAA at any event by scanning QR codes, and donation methods were streamlined for seamless support.

As our alumni evolve, so does BAW. Many who joined us in their 20s are now in their 30s with growing responsibilities. This year, we focused on keeping them engaged while maintaining our strong commitment to young alumni—offering connections and experiences few alumni associations provide.

With BAW '25, we balanced tradition with innovation, ensuring the BAA remains relevant, accessible, and impactful as we approach our 10-year anniversary.
